“Math World Tour – Cultural Mathematics Exploration”

The “Math World Tour – Cultural Mathematics Exploration” activity provided students with an opportunity to investigate mathematical concepts from diverse cultures, promoting an appreciation for the universal nature of mathematics. Class III students researched traditional number systems like Roman, Mayan, and Chinese systems, learning about their development and applications. Class IV students explored geometric patterns in art and architecture from cultures such as Islamic, African, and Native American traditions, analysing principles like symmetry and tessellation. Class V students delved into the contributions of mathematicians such as Hypatia, Aryabhata, and Sofia Kovalevskaya, showcasing their findings creatively through presentations and artwork. The final exhibition allowed students to reflect on and celebrate the richness of mathematical ideas across cultures, fostering curiosity and cultural appreciation.
The “Nutrition by the Numbers” activity engaged students in analysing real-world data to understand global food systems and the challenges of food security. Students collected and interpreted data on food consumption patterns and production rates, applying mathematical concepts like averages, percentages, and ratios. Through discussions, they explored factors influencing food security, such as resource distribution and environmental sustainability, and identified disparities in global food access. The activity concluded with group presentations where students shared their findings, demonstrating enhanced data analysis skills and a sense of global citizenship.
Both activities successfully enhanced students’ knowledge, analytical skills, and attitudes towards global issues, fostering interdisciplinary learning and a sense of responsibility for addressing real-world challenges. These activities empowered students to think critically and creatively while appreciating cultural and global diversity.
