Salwan Education Trust hosted two days Capacity Building Program. On 21 May 2024, the session commenced with an address by Smt. Jyotsna Grover, Vice Principal of SPS Rajinder Nagar, who delivered a summary of the key insights gathered from the previous day.
The first session was led by Shri Samarth Pathak from UNODC, who works for the mission “Rise for Peace” under the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, focusing on “Promoting a Culture of Peace and Lawfulness.” He discussed social issues such as violence, equality, justice, bullying, and more, in which young people are engaged. He also addressed emerging global threats to social peace and cohesion, like debt crises, terrorist attacks, and erosion of social cohesion. He further discussed SDG 16, which includes peace, justice, and strong institutions, as well as problems or situations that trigger violence, such as mental health, security, discrimination, and anti-corruption. He also discussed new models, experiments, and NEP 2020. After discussing various ways to increase peace in the classroom, he initiated a brainstorming session, dividing all facilitators into groups and asking them to discuss the key challenges in teaching SDG 16. The groups presented various ideas. The resource person concluded the session by describing facilitators as “LIGHTHOUSES” who can spread light to all the lives around them.
Following this, Ms. Tarana Ahmed, Director of Pedagogy, shared valuable insights on “Transitioning from Conventional to Integrated Skill-Based Lesson Plans.” She emphasized the need to move beyond rote learning and offered practical strategies for designing engaging lesson plans that foster critical thinking and collaboration. She provided practical strategies and hands-on activities for designing integrated lesson plans, including brain breaks to boost engagement. Teachers participated in hands-on activities to create sample lesson plans that incorporate various skills across different subjects.
The third session was led by Dr. Manish Samnani, Director of SOCH Gurgaon and President of the Haryana Chapter AIOTA, on “Inclusion and Managing Hyperactivity in the Classroom.” Dr. Samnani advocated for a holistic approach to inclusion, providing teachers with effective strategies for managing hyperactivity and accommodating diverse learning styles. He emphasized the importance of classroom accommodations and adopting a strength-based learning approach, acknowledging various learning styles—visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic. For auditory learners, he suggested utilizing audio aids and employing varied voices, while for kinesthetic learners, he recommended activities like puzzles and role-playing.
The day concluded with a reflective address by Headmistress Ms. Neetu Katyal, SPS Gurugram, who highlighted the significance of implementing the workshop’s insights in classrooms. These sessions aimed to modernize teaching practices, promote peace, and create inclusive learning environments in alignment with NEP 2020.
